• 铅 (qiān) = lead

• 笔 (bǐ) = writing instrument

So 铅笔 (qiānbǐ) literally means “lead writing tool.”  "bi" is replaced with the American word Bee.  Bee may not have the same pronouciation or accent as the Mandarin "bi", so we apologize to our Mandarin speaking cousins for this foreigner perspective.
